I waffled a bit over whether to sign up, because I haven't done any art for a while, but in the past with [community profile] yuletart the exchange deadline pressure always worked as sufficient motivation for me not to default and draw decent things. So I decided to sign up and hope it'll work out that way again.

BTW, you can still sign up until the 28th October, if you'd like to participate in a multi-fandom fanart exchange. I've done so several times now, and it's always been a pleasant and well-run exchange.

fanart, Solace

I linked my [community profile] yuletart artwork here before, because the exchange wasn't anon, but hadn't reposted while the exchange was still running. It's now over, and I'm putting it here too, to keep it together with the other fanart.

Fandom: Avengers/Spider-Man
Characters/Pairings: Steve Rogers, Peter Parker
Media used: indian ink and acrylics on paper, the original is ca. 16x18cm not counting the white border
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: This is the gift I made for PinkElephant42 for the [community profile] yuletart exchange. My prompt was for Steve Rogers/Peter Parker, "Meeting in the night, comfort." Thanks to Goss and AstridV who offered artbeta advice to make my initial pencils better.

Please do not distribute my art without my permission, i.e. do not upload my art to other sites, services, archives, or wikis. That includes uploading the images themselves to your own Tumblr, even with credit.

art, all for me!

Though you should take a look too at the great XMFC art [personal profile] roga drew for me for [community profile] yuletart. It's for my XMFC prompt to show Erik using his powers to build something.

shameless self-promotion...

The [community profile] yuletart artwork I made for [personal profile] pinkelephant42 has just been posted to the comm here, and since the exchange is non-anon this year, I can link right away. So take a look. (It's Captain America/Spider-Man art, SFW.)

I finished my Yuletart piece!

With a little time to spare even. Now I'll just have to try digitally fiddling with the colors that the scanner half-ruined (as usual), and maybe see whether I can do something about the artifacts from my paper having warped. But I have a finished, scanned picture, that I'll be able to submit before the deadline.

First I'm going to make myself some dinner though.

ETA: Submitted, finally. And it it only took until just after 2 a.m. First my scanner decided to descend into capricious divadom (the scan I thought was okay at first glance had a vertical stripe artifact), which took a while to sort out (first I tried getting another scanner to work, then another scanning program), then I fiddled with the finally stripe free picture, and then I had to come up with a title and a summary and all that, when normally I don't do titles for my art. All of which somehow always takes much longer than you think. But now it's done.

I made the last minute decision to sign up for [ profile] secret_mutant after all. So now I'm committed to two exchanges. *gulp*

But I got my assignment for [community profile] yuletart where you could pick prompts, and while I didn't get my favorite for a match, I think it is very doable and I have an idea how draw the prompt (my first two preferences weren't the first preferences the recipients wanted to get, whereas the one I got assigned was the first the recipient wanted, so I get why I was matched there).

And if I successfully manage to make these two pieces, my art output this year won't be quite so abysmal.

I am a bit worried about [ profile] secret_mutant because it is a mixed exchange, and in these the problem is always that many just don't think about art when prompting or giving extra info in exchange letters. I mean, I browsed the couple of letters people have already posted (I still need to post mine, I only just signed up), and three of the four only have sentences how they look forward to what people *write* or start with thanks for *writing* something, so if I got matched to someone like that, it would make me feel somewhat neurotic, that they'll just resent that they got matched with someone for art rather than getting a story and will not be happy with my gift no matter what.

I'm wondering whether I should sign up for [ profile] secret_mutant this year. It'll have quite a tight schedule, with just five weeks between getting the assignment and its due date, and I already signed up for [community profile] yuletart, which also gives about five weeks, though that'll be due about two weeks earlier. So they don't overlap completely. OTOH, I've not been productive art-wise at all recently, so I'm not sure I ought to sign up for multiple things. On the third hand I usually do manage to produce art with the pressure of an exchange, and I would get a fanwork too.

Yuletart is back this year!

[community profile] yuletart sign-ups are open!

The rules changed a bit with leaving prompts, and I have to say that I find it a bit tricky to think of prompts. Whenever I manage to come up with something, I keep thinking that this would be a nice fanart idea to do myself and I start thinking I could just keep the idea. Of course I never realize even a tiny fraction of the ideas in my fanart idea list, so it's a bit ridiculous to feel "possessive" like this. I find it hard to think of art ideas I want someone else to do, even if I try to remain more general. I find that easier in mixed exchanges, where I usually prompt with fic in mind.

I miss Yuletart

There doesn't seem to be a [ profile] yuletart this year, so I'm lacking a holiday exchange. I looked at [community profile] fandomcalendar to see whether there are any other art or art and fic exchanges, that are for one of my fandoms or multifandom, and that are still open for sign-up, but there don't seem to be any. There are fewer for art than for fic to begin with and mid-October is late too. :(

fanart process: my yuletart piece, "Fealty"

Considering the many, many hours my recently revealed yuletart picture took, I thought I ought to get more than one post out of it... ;)

picture heavy art process post )

fanart, Fealty

Fandom: Merlin
Characters/Pairings: Arthur, Merlin, Gwen, Gaius, Elyan, Geoffrey of Monmouth, Sir Leon, guards
Media used: Acrylic paint on paper; original size is roughly 34 x 32cm; scanned in parts and assembled digitally with some minor corrections in GIMP (hopefully not too noticeable). For more detail, see the process post.
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: I made this for the [ profile] yuletart gift exchange for [ profile] chen_san, originally posted here. Art betas were [personal profile] goss and [personal profile] vito_excalibur. It is set in the future. After Arthur becomes king Merlin swears an oath of fealty in a commendation ceremony to him.

Please do not distribute my art without my permission, i.e. do not upload my art to other sites, services, archives, or wikis. That includes "reblogging" the images themselves on services such as Tumblr.

a yuletart gift, all for me!

Well, you can take a look too, I guess. :D

And you should, because I got very cool, gen Merlin art, that suggest a story of magical fighting in the future.

...I've submitted my Yuletart piece. I had to ask for an extension, because even though I started painting my pencils one and a half weeks ago, I only finished today. And that despite working on it for several hours every day. And it doesn't even look like it took that much effort. I don't want to know how long this took in total, including the several pencil versions. But now it's done, even if it was four days late.

Also, posting there started today, so if you don't watch the comm already, you should definitely start checking it now.

looking for an artbeta

I have the preliminary pencils for my Yuletart piece. I need an artbeta to take a look at it before I transfer it to the expensive paper. After drawing and redrawing so many things, I probably wouldn't notice right now if I had drawn someone with a third arm.

Aside from more general comments (e.g. does it work to connect and tell a story), does the composition need tweaking, and such, I'd like the beta to check for perspective, anatomy, proportions, and other technical things. If you offer to beta, please also tell me which size you want to work on, i.e. whether you prefer the high resolution scan (rather largish at something like 3800x3400 px) or something smaller, and where to send the file.

Oh, and in case it makes a difference, the art is harmless and worksafe.

snapshots from my yuletart (non-)progress

One of the moments to wish for roommates: you find yourself tediously posing for some position, trying to catch yourself on autotimer with your crappy camera, and not just that, but actually half-naked because it turns out that if you photograph yourself wrapped in two layers, one of it a cozy, thick fleece, you can't easily deduce how the limb looks. I'd actually even take a tripod to put a camera on, because balancing said crappy camera on something a workable height facing in a direction where I can pose on doesn't really work all that well. Argh.

The good news is that I actually have an idea for my Yuletart assignment. The bad news is that it's complicated to draw. Why can't they finally develop some gadget that lets you think of your drawing and it then appears in your computer where you put on some finishing touches? This manual idea-to-paper transfer method just sucks, and the results are never what you want either. *is glum*

a pre-seasonal question

Now that the Christmas cookies have been around in stores for weeks, and the holiday exchange post frequency heats up on my dwircle/flist, it occurred to me that maybe I should think earlier about individualized holiday cards for my family, because last year I did none, and my online sort of holiday art was posted on the 28th.

However that reminded me of said holiday art, a Santa!Cthulhu, which I still find quite neat to look at, and I wondered whether anyone would think it fun to have it as a motif on one of these easy merchandise sites (like Zazzle or the like? I've never used any such site) that offer to create prints and cards and stuff. Hence this poll:

(ETA: I probably should have included some "I don't celebrate Christmas/don't care for some other reason." option, but then you'll just have to resist the lure of the ticky...)

In other holiday-related news: I got my Yuletart assignment, yay! (Though, omg, why aren't people more specific in their wishes than their favorite characters?? I wrote half an essay detailing my preferences, so long in fact that I had a shortened version in my comment and then linked a yuletart letter post!)

Letter to my Yuletart artist

Dear Yuletart artist,

first, thank you for drawing me a picture in one of my fandoms. I'm not set on anything specific for any of the fandoms I listed, so if you have a great idea, just go for it.

However, if you are looking for inspiration or more guidance and information about my likes and dislikes... )

Yuletart sign-ups!

I just signed up for [ profile] yuletart, and you should sign up too if you like drawing fanart.

Though took me something like two hours to edit my detailed request info so that it fit into the tiny 4300 character LJ comment, because I'd be happy to receive something in ten fandoms, so that comment length gave barely room to mention my favorite characters.

Anyway, it's an awesome art exchange. This will be the fourth time I'm participating and it has been running more smoothly every year. And I wouldn't want to miss it, even though I will just have to hope for the best wrt to the somewhat unpredictable family-related hazards to my schedule.

fanart, Offworld Team Camping

Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagan, Ronon Dex
Media used: pencil drawing, inked with fine liner pens, acrylic paint
Rating/warnings: G, none
Notes/comments: This was my [ profile] yuletart gift for Mashimero, originally posted during yuletart here. Mashimero asked for fluffy, happy team bonding scenes, and for gen or McShep, so this is a team scene, with very mild McShep cuddling. John, Rodney, Teyla and Ronon are making S'mores.
