I watched the SGA season finale

spoilers for SGA 4x20 )

Totally unrelated to SGA I learned a new piece of trivia today: I've always been vaguely puzzled by the color name "ivory black" because it seemed contradictory (ivory not being black and all). Then today I happened to look at the label on the back of a tube of acrylic ivory black, one that went into all kinds of technical detail that I have no idea what it means (it has some kind of numbers for hue, value, chroma and codes for the pigments and symbols for opaqueness and lightfastness and so on) but also had a list of ingredients and apparently that black is made from charred animal bones. Hence the name "ivory black".

And I get that historically, though I'd have thought that by now the color would be synthetic. I mean, it's not they are still grinding up lapis lazuli for ultramarine (well, I guess there might be people who are into restoration and such and make their colors themselves from scratch with pigments or specialty producers who still do that, but usually it's synthetic these days). So it's kind of gross that they still use animal bones, but that what the tube says in its ingredient list under the "vehicle: acrylic polymer emulsion" there's "pigment: amorphous carbon produced by charring animal bones". So I'm using the same pigment as my prehistoric ancestors, I guess, only in a prepared polymer solution rather than charring some hunted mammoth's bone myself. Still in my mind "gross" kind of wins out over "artistic connection across millennia of history".

I watched the pilot of Journeyman and cut for spoilers )

I also gave Chuck a try, but I think I rather rewatch Jake 2.0 (what little there is of that series before they cancelled it), if I want a premise like that than this series.

tv watching...

Since my f-list doesn't seem to have many Avatar the Last Airbender fans on it, I didn't see any mention that the third season was finally airing, and only noticed with a couple of days delay. Anyway I now watched 3x01, and am really glad it's back. The season opener seemed mostly about setting the stage, and recapping where we at, which was fine by me. Anyway, yay for Avatar being back!

I also watched the Heroes second season premiere, but I'm not really fannish about it in the sense that I read fanfic or discussion. I think that's because while I like the characters okay, I don't really have a favorite I could identify with, which is a prerequisite for me to feel fannish, even for ensemble shows. Besides the Heroes cast is so large that it is hard for me to really identify with anyone. I mean, in one sense it is cool that the universe isn't claustrophobic but I don't get as invested emotionally.

Anyway, about the season two premiere, cut for spoilers )

Finally, I've seen some people talk about that new show, Reaper, and they seemed entertained, but I've been wary of giving it a try because it's comedy, and my embarrassment squick often has problems with setups like this. For example I couldn't get into Psych when I watched the pilot and the first episode, because the whole premise was leading to situations that just made me cringe. So has anyone on my f-list watched it and could tell me whether the humor relies a lot on socially awkward situations/misunderstandings and such? If yes, there's not reason for me to even give it a try.
